Haven 2x12 Review

There was some great stuff in this episode, stuff that I really liked but there was also some things I really disliked.
• Duke/Audrey was amazing. We got so many moments showing how much Duke cares for Audrey. I loved it.
“I didn't like him when he was alive and I'm certainly not gonna kill anyone for him now that he is dead. Especially not you.” Aw. He’s basically confessing his feelings to her and telling her that he’s loyal to her. And yet she doesn’t seem to understand what he’s saying. So what happened between the end of the last episode where they were working together and it was all intimate and close and this scene where they clearly didn’t talk afterward and things are much more distant between them?
“You’d better not be here to hurt her.” I hated this scene but I did love Duke threatening the Rev.
“Don't listen to her.” – Simon
“She's a liar.” – Rev
“No. She's my friend.” – Duke
♥ My favourite moment of the episode.
• Audrey/Nathan was pretty adorable. I loved the scene where he asks her out for dinner. Her suggestion about making pancakes and his reaction to it was delightful. Aw, you guys.
• Does Duke realise that he was the cause of Nathan’s Trouble manifesting? Nathan thinks Duke doesn’t give a damn but perhaps he doesn’t even realise. I love that it was Duke that was the cause.
• “She needs my help and you’re not getting in my way this time.” – Vince. Hmm. Who was Sarah to Vince and Lucy? The ring Vince gave Audrey – was that an engagement ring? Was ‘Sarah’ Vince’s fiancé or in a love triangle with Vince and Dave? Or was Vince in love with her and in a relationship with her and Dave was against it (similar to the Chief)? I mean clearly she wasn’t just ‘a friend’. Oh, I find this so interesting. This puts a much more different spin on their interactions with her. I’m so interested in them and this part of the mystery now.
• I was hoping that Audrey would run into a ghost who knew her as Lucy and get some more information that way.
• “What a waste of a good cooler.” – Chief. Hee. I loved the Chief’s momentary return. I also loved his reaction to learning Audrey shot the Rev “Good for her. Good” LOL. The Chief/Nathan scenes were great.
• So Vince dug up the Chief’s remains because he thinks they’ll need him... does this mean he can be brought back to life? It seemed like they were hinting that he’ll be back next season.
• “It’s different this time. She’s different this time.” – Vince. I’d like to know more about this. How is Audrey different from Lucy? Is it different because Audrey has Nathan and Duke? Or is it because Audrey knows the truth, sort of, about who she is? What sticks out to me is that if Audrey is different – as well as her having the support of two very important people on either side of the Troubled situation – then perhaps this incarnation of her will stop the cycle of Troubled for good this time.
• I really love that Duke’s reaction to his family legacy was a repeated disbelieving ‘no fucking way’ to the idea of killing people to stop curses.
• I like that Duke tells Audrey and Nathan about his father and family legacy/Trouble (?) as soon as he saw them. Because, at least before this episode, they talk to each other and don’t keep secrets.
• What exactly was the point of all the ghosts surrounding Nathan and Audrey? They converged on them, stood there for a second and then wandered away... why? There was no point that I saw.
• Nathan telling Audrey that Duke couldn’t be trusted – where the hell did that come from? What a completely random scene. There was no build up to it which makes me wonder if they cut a scene or a couple of them? So it’s placement in the episode was random and then just the fact that Nathan was being so emphatic that “you can never trust him!” was weird. Especially after his belief in Duke two episodes ago and how he’s spent basically the entire season trusting Duke as their backup. I’m finding it hard to reconcile his reactions to Duke in this episode to his behaviour towards him in basically all previous episodes. I mean sure there have always been trust issues between them but Nathan’s reactions just don’t work with where they are in their relationship currently. The only thing I can think of is that Nathan is jealous. That now that he has an actually shot at being with Audrey he sees Duke as his competition and it has him, perhaps subconsciously, trying to create distance between Audrey and Duke as well as causing him to once again distrust Duke.
• I really hated the scene where Audrey and Duke go to investigate the house.
1. Why the hell wouldn’t Audrey ask Duke who he was seeing? It was clear he was seeing a ghost and I just don’t buy at all that she didn’t realise it. Nor do I buy that she wouldn’t ask.
2. Why the hell wouldn’t Duke tell her he was seeing the Rev. There was no reason for him to not saying anything to her especially considering how the show has built up the three of them keeping each other informed. For him to suddenly start keeping things from her, while she’s right there, and for no obvious reason pisses me off. It would be different if the Rev has immediately threatened Audrey, all – I have someone with a gun on her, get rid of her so we can talk – well, then I could have understood it. As it was – no.
3. Duke leaving with the Rev was ridiculous. I mean I love that he’s willing to do anything for Audrey and how protective he is of her but acceding to the Rev’s threat was stupid. She killed him so I rather think he’s going to want revenge anyway.
There are a number of ways this could have worked better such as have a one of the Rev’s followers show up and hold a gun on him or knock him out and kidnap him. Or have Duke realise the Rev is up to something and agree to go with him to play mole again. Going that way the show could have had him text Audrey the location which also would have worked better for me as a way to get Audrey and Nathan to the shack.
• “You working with the Rev?” – Nathan. Ugh. How things can change in two episode. It wouldn’t bother me if there had been some build up to it. Two episodes ago Duke pointed a gun at him and basically stated he was siding with the (living) Rev and Nathan was all about giving him the benefit of the doubt while Audrey was distrustful. Now we have Nathan faced with a far less obvious scene – Duke simply arriving on scene with the Rev – and suddenly he’s totally buying that Duke is working with the Rev? WTF? Seriously the only thing that makes sense to me is that Nathan is now blinded by jealousy. On the other hand, this time Audrey’s reaction was a lot more measured – a cautious “Duke, what are you doing?” – which worked perfectly with what’s come before. Where Nathan’s reaction doesn’t work for me, Audrey’s fits her arc and relationship with Duke perfectly. As for Duke I was really feeling bad for him. He’s having a really bad day, which he’s spent trying to come to terms with what his father told him while also trying to protect Audrey and convince her she can trust him, and now he’s faced with Nathan and Audrey’s lack of trust in him. He just wants them to love and trust him back!
• Simon seems to imply that it’s inevitable that Audrey will kill Duke because her previous incarnations killed him and Duke’s grandfather but what he’s glossing over and what hopefully Duke realised was that Simon and his father were both killing off Troubled and Audrey was protecting them.
• The exchange between the three ghosts – the Chief, the Rev and Simon – was excellent. They perfectly encapsulated the past and the previous generation. How it was all about the two sides vs each other and how everything had become a cycle of violence.
“Not this time. She can't stop my son.” – Simon
“I have a son, too. A damn good one. (to Nathan) Just take care of our girl, okay?” – Chief.
This. Just – the previous generation in the form of two fathers’s pushing their sons to follow in their footsteps. To win their father’s war – to kill Audrey or protect her. But neither son got along with their father, and neither really wants to follow in their footstep (Nathan in keeping a distance from her, Duke in killing her.) They’re different and that is in large part because of Audrey. Audrey who is really the centre of everything here - both in her relationships with the Wuornos and Crocker men but also in who she is this time. The older men are talking about her almost as an object here, she’s what they’re fighting over, but this is Audrey and that’s not really what she is. I think it’s going to be the three of them together that is going to change things and set the town on a new path. I think that’s the only way it could happen.
• I don’t know how much Nathan was paying attention but hearing his father’s praise was probably a really nice moment for him.
• Wait, so did neither Audrey nor Nathan speak to Duke after the whole shack scene? Really?!
• I’m hoping that Audrey saves herself.
• I’m torn on the end. Nathan’s distrust of Duke (and jealousy?) in this episode coming to head with him completely losing it and not thinking annoyed me a little because it felt a bit forced. Especially when it appear as if Nathan was actually going to shoot Duke – which if he had taken Audrey is stupid. How would shooting her kidnapper help him to find her? Nathan suddenly having the tattoo as well made me go ‘WTH’ which seemed to be Duke’s reaction as well. I forgot how those work – do they just appear on the Troubled then? As far as the cliff-hanger I just don’t buy either of the guys shooting each other.
• I love that Duke has weapons hidden everywhere in his boat.
• So clearly someone is trying to set up Nathan or Duke but which side?
