Fringe 4x01 and 4x02 Thoughts

• I really liked that subtle ways that the characters were different. Walter was the most obvious but both Blue Olivia and Red Olivia seemed slightly different as well. The thing I’m most curious about – did the Yellow universe have Cortexiphan trials or not? Because I noticed Olivia wearing a very blue shirt at one point and it made me go hmm. I want Olivia to still have her powers.
• Walter made me sad. So fearful and living in the lab... poor Walter. I loved the moment between him and Olivia when she reassured him. I wonder if their relationship, and his with Astrid, is as close as in the Blue universe? Actually if the Cortexiphan trials never happened, or not to Olivia, it’s entirely possible they could be closer.
• Olivia remains my favourite ever. She was wonderful as always.
• I liked this Lincoln but I’m disappointed by Blue Lincoln being situated as Olivia’s new partner. Or, I suppose he’d actually be Yellow Lincoln? Hmm. Anyway there are several reasons for this:
1) When I read that the actor was being made a regular this season I was so excited because I assumed that meant we’d be getting more of Red Lincoln, whom I love. I was also looking forward to more Red Lincoln and Red Charlie interactions with both Olivia’s but especially Blue Olivia. They were one of my favourite things about season three. I realise that Charlie’s actor joining a new show made that impossible but that doesn’t mean we couldn’t have Red Lincoln. It could have been an exchange program!
2) I was really hoping season 4 would give us Blue Olivia partnering in some manner with Red Olivia.
3) I was pretty excited at the start of the episode to see Astrid out with Olivia and for a minute there I thought it meant she was actually Olivia’s partner in the Yellow universe. I certainly understand how Yellow Astrid ended up in the same job as Blue Astrid, in fact with Peter’s absence it makes even more sense to have Astrid as his caretaker/assistant, but I still felt myself feeling a bit resentful of Lincoln. Of course if she was only Olivia’s partner I probably wouldn’t have been very happy about that because I adore the Astrid/Walter relationship too. In fact she’s kind of like his partner. Anyway. It was nice to see her in the field.
• When Olivia was explaining to Lincoln that she’d lost a partner it really bugged me that she didn’t say partners. She lost John, sure, but she also lost Charlie.
4x02 One Night In October
I loved this episode. This was a lot more of what I was expecting from this season. Blue Olivia working with the Red team = awesomeness and joy. I also enjoyed the case in this episode a lot more.
• The only disappointment is that with Peter’s erasure we’re dealing with a new over universe (yellow) which means there are difference in both the blue and red universes and I felt like the show could have done better showing that while also still showing how blue Olivia’s time on the other side affected the red team and her relationships with them. Example – her interactions with Lincoln and especially Broyles lacked the weight I was expecting considering how early season 3 played out.
Lincoln didn’t know that she was not his Olivia at the time but now he knows that he worked with her for months and that all the little things he probably noticed different and then brushed aside were actually pieces of Blue Olivia. During their scene in the car instead of telling her he knew because ‘Red Olivia would feel the same’ I wish he’d instead mentioned her time playing Red Olivia and how take charge she was (which was one of the most noticeable difference between the two).
Then there is Red Broyles who is awesomely enough alive. That made me really happy. But there was nothing to indicate that he even knew Blue Olivia let alone that in this yellow version they had the bond they had in season three. The fact that he’s even alive means one of three things: 1) he didn’t help Olivia escape (and if not how did she do it?), 2) Walternate didn’t kill him, 3) he did help Olivia but got away with it. If it is #1 does that mean she never helped with his son which is mainly what lead him to helping her? It would explain his behaviour in this episode. Though granted he’s not the most open of people and they were in the middle of a crisis so it could have still happened.
Mainly I just want some acknowledgment of Blue Olivia’s time in the red universe especially as it pertains to her relationships with the others. I want unexpected bonding!
• I love that it was Blue Olivia’s superior memory that saved the day.
• I also loved the Blue/Red Olivia conversation in the car. I liked that Red Olivia is a) realising that she doesn’t actually know Blue Olivia as well as she thought, and b) hopefully being to empathise with her more. Hopefully this is the start to them becoming friends and/or inter-dimensional partners.
• There was so much aw to Astrid gently trying to encourage Olivia to date blue Lincoln. I loved their big smiles at each other. They’re friends! Can we pleased get to see them hanging out outside of work just once?
• The show wouldn’t try to throw in a Yellow Lincoln/Blue Olivia/Peter triangle would they?
• I loved the little bit between Walter, Lincoln and Astrid at the beginning and that it was Lincoln who was sent off to help Walter. Perhaps they'll switch off who gets to help Olivia in the field and who helps Walter. I'd like that. Also I liked that Walter got Lincoln's name wrong.
• “Do you ever think that maybe your type just doesn’t exist?” – Astrid to Olivia. Ouch, the anvils the show has been throwing around these last two episodes are kind of painful at points.
• “I’ve always thought that there were people who left an indelible mark on your soul. An imprint that can’t be erased.” – Broyles. I was pleased that it was Peter’s relationship with Walter, not Olivia, that was emphasised as the more significant at the end. Walter who is seeing and hearing Peter, not just subconsciously missing his presence like Olivia.
• I continue to like Yellow Lincoln but I still love Red Lincoln best. I loved his amusement at Blue Olivia's unwillingness to concede any similarities to Red Olivia.
• Every little bit of Red Lincoln/Blue Olivia interaction made me absurdly pleased. At the end when they went off together, like partners, it made me really happy. As did him holding Red Olivia back and telling her to “give her a minute”. It’s kind of ridiculous how much I ship them. I mean when Red Olivia mentioned Frank and it became clear that he was still in her life I was immediately pleased because it meant he was still free for Blue Olivia. It is never going to happen, I know. The show is Olivia/Peter all the way and I actually do like Red Olivia/Lincoln, and yet.
• There’s possibly more proof that the Cortexiphan trials never happened (or Olivia’s part in them) – her killing her stepfather. In the Blue universe Walter threatened her stepfather to get him to leave him alone so if that never happened – either because Walter wasn’t in her life, or also possibly because she never told him and he never met her stepfather – then I can see the abuse escalating to the point where she’d have done it. Or I could be over thinking it and when she shot him twice in the yellow universe he died instead of surviving? Regardless of how it happened I love that she killed him.
• Peter would have gotten more of a reaction if he’d called Walter ‘dad’.
• Since I understand why there was no Charlie I am really pleased that they explained it away as him being on his honeymoon instead of something horrible like he was ambered or died from his worm infestation.
