The Vampire Diaries 3x05 Review

• I really liked the last scene. Stuff about it:
- I loved Damon’s helplessness in how to deal with a grieving/upset Elena. He was so uncertain about what to do and that is just so him. I loved the way he offered her back her necklace, so hopeful that it would make things better and then was left feeling even more uncertain when it instead caused her to open up about her pain.
- “Where were you, Damon?” – Elena. She has come to depend on him so much. I love also how she makes this – Stefan and the loss of him – about them. It was their loss, not just hers. It was what “we” went through and then when they truly lost him (Klaus compelling him) Elena was alone. It worked for me really well.
- “I promise you. I will never leave you again.” – Damon. ♥
- Stefan showing up, interrupting the Damon/Elena moment amuses me. Their expressions, his casualness... I can see it now. Elena/Damon will be sharing a moment and Stefan will pop up all ‘don’t mind me, please continue’.
- “From now on you’re under my protection.” – Stefan. I love this so much. It just works for me. He’s doesn’t care, he’s probably going to do horrible things, and is different and threatening but he’s still going to be there protecting Elena. I can’t wait to see how this all plays out.
- Switched-off ripper Stefan is really hot.
• I loved how hard Stefan fought against Klaus’s compulsions to hurt Elena. Him throwing himself into walls and then planning to stake himself... oh, Stefan.
• I really hope that with ‘evil’ Stefan now living back at home we’ll get more Stefan/Damon stuff.
• I love the twist that Elena’s blood is what is needed to make more hybrids. That’s a very believable way to keep her alive and safe from Klaus without sacrificing him as a bad guy.
• I really didn’t like the reveal that Matt can still see Vicki. The whole idea of him dying by drowning and Bonnie bring him back with CPR and that allowing him to see ghosts irritated me so much because it made no sense. Jeremy sees ghosts because Bonnie brought him back with powerful magic; power that she doesn’t have access to anymore. I was getting all worked up about the stupidity of it all when they instead had Vicki talking to a dead Matt and I accepted that as believable enough. Except then the show turned around and had him see Vicki at the end and I’m irritated again. If he really can see ghosts now, instead of just Vicki, I’m not going to be pleased with the show. As it is I really hope we get a good explanation.
• Tyler being turned into a hybrid I didn’t see coming and I’m really not sure how I feel about it. Clearly, despite his current sense of well-being and euphoria, something is not right and it makes me nervous for Tyler and Caroline. Beyond that his new status leaves a lot of questions – can he change at will, can his own blood heal a bite from him, is he stronger than vampires – Caroline, Damon? I really don’t like the idea of him being stronger than Caroline. Her being the physically stronger one in the relationship is something I loved.
• Caroline/Tyler were really adorable.
• Sadly the Katherine/Damon road trip proved to be ... disappointing. I liked what we did get – the snarking was fun, the make-out was hot, and I loved Damon throwing how much he doesn’t want Katherine now back in her face – but I wanted a lot more. I don’t know that I believe Damon’s constant put downs of Katherine though I enjoyed them. “I wouldn’t have done it for you” – really? He waited 146 years for her. It was a great parting shot but it just seems like him re-writing history. “You just don’t do it for me anymore” – hmm. I don't know that I buy that completely.
“Oh stop being cute.” – Damon
“It’s not possible.” – Katherine
Cute!
• It will be interesting to see where the Katherine/Jeremy roadtrip goes. He certainly seems to be handling being stuck with her really well. Mostly though I find myself worried about what could happen to Katherine when they free Mikael. I wonder if her being a doppelganger is what will keep her from harm?
• Elena and Caroline were adorable at the beginning. Elena finishing Caroline’s spiel with an affectionate grin and Elena and Caroline’s exchange of grins when Elena was leaving and Caroline’s “I love you!” I love Elena getting involved and letting herself be happy in large part for Caroline. I also just loved the four of them – Elena, Caroline, Bonnie and Tyler – hanging out and having fun together.
• I love how smart the Original Witch was. Her plan with regards to Klaus’s curse and how it worked was actually kind of brilliant.
• I’m wondering if perhaps the Original Witch was also the original that the doppelgangers are based on?
• I don’t buy Matt not remembering about prank night at the beginning. There was a lot about that that didn’t make sense – him being in the school working out, the fact that he didn’t come across any other student that night, that none of the group had dragged him to the school to help. Also in the same vein – why the hell was the light off while they were setting their mousetrap prank up? That makes no sense.
• I love that Klaus’s first reaction to learning that Elena’s had the necklace all along is to immediately turn to Stefan and be all ‘more lies!’ Aw, poor betrayed Klaus. He tells Elena that he ‘fixed’ Stefan after compelling Stefan’s emotions off but I wonder if he really believes that? He liked Stefan and without those emotions is he really the Stefan who was Klaus’s friend? I’m doubtful that Klaus actually thinks that because if he did then he would have compelled Stefan a while back. Plus I’d have thought he’d be a lot more pleased in his final scene than he seemed to be. I also wonder if he didn’t purposefully set Stefan to watch over Elena as a way to avoid the new him. After all he easily could have taken Elena with him when he fled.
• I really enjoyed Klaus a lot. I loved him trapping Elena in the gym by compelling Stefan to ‘fracture her spine if she runs’ and just how cruel he was throughout. I love that he didn’t just immediately kill Elena but waited first to make sure that would be the right thing to do. I like that he figured out that the original witch would lie.
• This episode had a lot of that casual vampire violence but what stuck out most was Damon smacking Jeremy’s head into the table and Jeremy’s pretty mild reaction to it. Granted Damon didn’t kill him like he did Alaric but I thought it was interesting.
• I liked Jeremy – he took being kidnapped and threatened really in stride and was snarky.
• The Bonnie/Matt scenes were a bit unexpected, I can’t think of that last scene they had together, but I liked them.
• Katherine was great as always. I loved her kidnapping Jeremy.
• Vicki certainly seemed very Vicki-like and the fact that she’s been in contact with the original witch makes me wonder about Anna’s assertion that Jeremy can’t trust her.
