Ghost World

I enjoyed this episode.

• The most moving moment for me was Anna and Pearl reuniting at the end. It actually made me cry. That was exactly what I wanted. It was a perfect moment. Also perfect was Anna’s reveal that she took the necklace not because she wanted to be with Jeremy but because she wanted to find her mother. ♥ Oh, Anna. I wish both of them could stick around but I am so glad that they're finally together again.

• The biggest issue by far was the complete absence of Jenna. WTF was up with that? She didn’t show up (and I don’t buy that she didn’t have unresolved business) but maybe the actress was unavailable and that’s unfortunate but understandable. But that neither Elena, nor Jeremy nor Alaric said anything about her? That is not explainable. And when you get a scene with the three of them not only interacting but talking about Jeremy’s ability to see ghosts together then it sticks out even more. Now there were some exchange of glances that could have been about her but if they were it wasn’t clear.

- Beyond Jenna I was sad not to see John or Isabel but I understand they couldn’t fit everyone in and TPTB gave me so much of what I wanted – Anna/Pearl, Bonnie/Sheila, Lexie/Stefan – that I’m fine with it. I do really wish that the show could have drawn the ghost thing out longer – or, well, since I don’t think the ghost storyline is done that they’d drawn out

“We’re not a team. You tried to kill me, alright. We’re not friends. I don’t like you anymore.” – Alaric. LOL. Alaric really sounded like a sulking little boy here. Also I have to say Alaric's anger is understandable and all but he was completely wrong about Damon - he didn’t try to kill him. If Damon wanted to kill Alaric he would have taken off his ring and then killed him. Instead he was just being Damon and lashing out. Yes, it was extreme but as Alaric’s grown fond of pointing out – vampires are not like humans.

• Lexie knocking Stefan into the car window – awesome! I loved it. (Also see: vampires = violence.) The torture session afterward less so.

“Witches talk. Even on the other side. Who do you think makes all the rules?” – Sheila. I loved Caroline’s smile at that! I also really want to know more about this.

• I like Elena telling Caroline about Anna and Jeremy. I loved her anger at Jeremy – “You’re right; it’s yours.” Not letting him off for a second. Never considering for a second keeping it a secret from Bonnie.

• It appears that only supernatural ghosts are appearing – no Andi, John, Richard. I wonder if there’s a reason for that.

“I do a lot of things I don’t have to do.” – Damon. Mason laughing was unexpected, he’s taking it well. Also that is not in any way an apology.

• Huh, Damon and Mason – maybe Damon can have a new ghost BFF? He makes some of his best friends after killing them after all and I really enjoyed them.

• Caroline telling Bonnie the truth and being supportive is great; but I like the undercurrent of getting rid of Anna to keep her away from Jeremy a lot less. It’s not really Anna who is the problem here; its Jeremy.

“I know you’ll do anything for your brother. You won’t screw me over as long as we have the same agenda.” – Mason. Hmm. Very true. It would be nice if we could actually get to see some of that strong Stefan/Damon relationship on screen. I don't understand why there has been so little focus on them and their relationship especially considering it all started because Stefan wanted to save Damon's life.

- I wonder how much time Mason spent watching Damon? I wonder if a big part of his ease around Damon and lack of anger is because of that time spent observing him. (Also – guilt for what happened to Tyler, and learning the truth about Katherine probably played a part.)

• I feel sad for both Stefan and Tyler. It appears that Mason didn’t see Tyler while visible and I’m sure that is a meeting he really could have used. For Stefan to have the chance to see his BFF Lexie again – and to be as he is now, and not caring, is really horrible. If only this had happened last season when they could have talked together, and laughed and enjoyed the chance to be together again.

• I really liked that as soon as Elena saw the damage and deaths being caused by the ghosts she immediately gave up on the idea of giving Lexie more time to help Stefan and sent Jeremy to Bonnie to get rid of the ghosts.

• It felt a little weird that neither Mason nor Damon mentioned Katherine.

"Bonnie, you've got your ghost-boyfriend drama. Elena has hers. And right now, the mother of mine is about to be ghost bait, so go and send them all back to the other side, okay?" – Caroline. Oh, Caroline. I love her. I love that she fought to save Carol and that Carol saw it.

“We’re all alone. We watch the people we leave behind and we regret our decisions.” – Anna. That is so sad. Is this something that happens to all supernatural beings? Except we know that witches at least talk to each other.

“I don’t want to be alone anymore.” – Anna. Oh, Anna.

• Okay, so do the ghosts not have the same strength as when they were alive? They clearly have some of it – Mason knocked Damon across the room and the tomb vamps fought Caroline – but at the same time Mason couldn’t break through the wall and the tomb vamps, even out-numbering her, couldn’t beat Caroline even though they had a 150+ years on her.

“It’s okay Lexie I know what to do now. You can be free.” – Elena. I really liked this.

“You are stronger than all of this. I am so proud of you.” – Sheila. The Sheila/Bonnie scenes were lovely and I am so happy for Bonnie that she got to have those hours with her Grams.

“Well, other than Elena you’re the only one I trust.” – Damon. That’s really nice and all but my first thought was: What about Liz!? Is their friendship really that destroyed? That makes me sad.

“Yeah, well I didn’t mean it with him.” – Damon. AWWWW. And it looks like Damon has already started to win Alaric back over.

• So... I'm confused about where the show is going with the whole Ripper!Stefan storyline which leaves me feeling very uncertain about it.

- Are they saying that Ripper!Stefan and normal Stefan aren't the same person a la Angelus/Angel? Because I really hope not. It makes no sense in this universe. I'd hate it if they did that and yet that keeps being how it comes off. But then it's also treated as if he's an alcoholic.

- Another aspect is Lexie trying to force him to 'return' to his 'normal/non-addicted' self with neither her nor Elena addressing the fact that this time Stefan has been compelled by an Original to turn off his switch. So… he can’t just choose to turn them back on right? It’s like a vampire compelling a human and thus it’s not a matter of strength of will anymore. He doesn’t have a choice. If he was just Ripper!Stefan than it would make sense. But not with the compulsion on him. If he can break through then does that mean that all compulsions can be broken?

“No, I’m going to go home take care of my brother, be a friend to Bonnie and everything else I need to do.” – Elena.

• Despite how bad I feel for Bonnie right now I actually find myself not as mad at Jeremy as I would expect. If Anna had left when she was planning too, returned and then things played out this way I would be pissed. But she didn’t leave, she died. He didn’t get to say goodbye, he didn’t get closure to their relationship or his complicated feelings for her. I can’t blame him for not wanting to let go. If I had the chance to have someone I loved as a ghost in my life I know I would take it. So I can’t hate him.

- Also I don’t think the Matt-Jeremy comparison was really fair. Matt didn’t really choose to give up Vicki so much as he was forced to because she turned violent and tried to kill Elena. Anna was no danger to anyone. I doubt that Matt would have done it so easily if she was simply hanging out with him.

- I still think this aspect of the ghost storyline played out wrong. Vicki willing to do anything to get her life back and Anna wanting to be with Jeremy both make complete character sense. The issue I have is that we got Jeremy/Anna romance instead of Jeremy/Vicki and while I believe that Jeremy cares for Anna a lot I always felt like his feelings for Vicki were stronger. This Anna/Jeremy storyline would have worked much better for me if it had been Jeremy/Vicki especially with his declarations of love. It looks like Anna is gone permanently (sad) but I think Vicki could be back so perhaps we can still get some Jeremy/Vicki resolution.
