Queen of Katwe and Triangle Thoughts

It was good.
+ I liked that there was a focus on Phiona’s family and struggles.
+ I wish that we’d had a little more of Phiona’s wonder at the new sights and experiences she gets. That little moment seeing snow for the first time was great, I just wanted more of that.
+ I did love when the Pioneers first saw the school in Sudan and it shocked them quiet.
+ Phiona’s breakdown when she lost the Olympiad really emphasised that she was 14.
+ I liked Robert a lot too, and his relationship with Phiona and his Pioneers.
+ I thought the director did a pretty good job at making the chess matches interesting.
Triangle
That was an enjoyable little thriller. I liked it.
+ It’s definitely more thriller than horror movie, imo, but it works.
+ Melissa George did a great job.
+ I enjoy ghost ships and Bermuda triangle horror but I loved that wasn’t what this movie was about and the time loop reveal was excellent.
+ I didn’t see the ending with the car crash, or the reveal that Jess was an abusive mother, coming.
+ It seems pretty obvious that like Sisyphus, Jess is repeating the day over and over. In the process she learns to appreciate her son and deeply regret her actions towards him but is never able to save him. I’m thinking that it actually happened – the very first time they both died in a car accident (she was rushing to the marina, got distracted by him) and this is her version of the afterlife/hell.
+ The taxi driver, who appears to know what’s going on, is the ferryman. He asks where she wants to go and each time she chooses the harbour and a return to the loop. I love that she chooses it voluntarily in order to try and save her son. Even knowing how thing would play out and that she would lose her memory when she fell asleep she keeps choosing it. I wonder what would happen if she gave the driver a different answer?
+ It’s a closed loop, and probably hell, but I’m very curious what would have happened if the original Jess had met everyone before they got onto the boat and forced them to stay on the overturned schooner or if she’d taken her mask off during her confrontation with her other self, and if that could change anything?
+ I’m curious about the others. Are they real, and Jess is murdering them over and over, or are they figments used to further her own torture of herself? It’s a loop so it doesn’t matter much but morally they are two different things. If she assumes they are real then she finds it an acceptable choice to sacrifice their lives for her son which is a bit dark. And possibly another reason why she’s stuck in a hell loop.
