The Corsican [No. 20]

+ Red leaving Liz with the bomb to go explore the UN made absolutely no sense. "You should be fine"? Are you kidding me? Red is never that cavalier about Liz's safety! Okay, that's a lie. He has on occasion been similarly cavalier seeming (having her kidnapped, for example) and each of those times it came off as OOC as it does here.

+ I wasn't really surprised that Liz was the one to turn Red in since that's exactly what I was expecting based on the trailer but I am a little surprised by how upset Liz was about it. I mean she was so righteously angry at him (for super understandable reasons!) last season and, while I knew that her love for him would shine through, I figured her anger would carry her through more than two episodes! I love how complicated her emotions are right now. I love how upset she was by the fact that he was more concerned about who betrayed him than the fact that he was arrested. She wants him to be better, to not already be plotting someone's murder. The way her voice slightly cracks when she says "and face the death penalty" was great because he might not be worried but she is. She is so scared by the idea that he could be killed. It would hurt her, and she knows it. I was sure that she'd be repressing that a lot more than she is.

+ A tearful Liz wonders at the end what Red will do if he finds out it was her who betrayed him and all I could think of was a quote from Doctor Who:

"Do you think that I care for you so little that betraying me will make a difference?"

Like, this is Red. He's going to be hurt but yeah. I can't see him ever turning against her. I don't actually think Liz is worried he'd try to have her killed or hurt her in some other way. I think she's upset that he'd learn she betrayed him and be hurt and that it could ruin their relationship (even more). A part of her doesn't want to lose him and now she thinks there's a chance she could.

+ Also "That depends..." '...if it was you' was how that was going to end, right? Or even '...why you did it'. Red has to heavily suspect her. In fact there's really only her and Dembe who knew where he was heading?

+ I mention in the last review that Liz needed to step her acting up and I thought she really did this ep. Her performance with Ressler was pretty amazing, enough so that I actually re-thought who did it and wondered if Jennifer had done it behind her back. Her deflecting suspicion from herself by making Ressler feel self-defensive and then reassuring him she believed him was well done if very manipulative. I also thought she did pretty well during her final scene with Red.

+ I liked Liz's plan. It was pretty selfish (the good Red does) and manipulative towards her co-workers in order to further her own goals but Jennifer is right that they will never succeed with Red around and it's exactly the type of ruthless move I can see her making.

+ "None of us would betray Mr. Reddington like that." Aw Aram, he's such a sweetie. I love how upset he was by Red's arrest.

+ "I don't get it but I accept it." Eehhh, I don't know how much I believe that. I mean, much like with Liz, Jennifer is coming off a lot less angry than I was expecting, and she's been very supportive of Liz which I'm enjoying. But I'm having a hard time with her being this accepting. Red is her boogeyman! So her being gentle and supportive with Liz, with so little hint of her rage at Red, ends up making me think that she's purposefully taking this tact to manipulate/control Liz. Time with tell. I figured she'd be the one keeping Liz on track on their anti-Red campaign (check) and that it would lead to a rift between the sisters and them eventually going against each other so we will see.

+ Why didn't Ressler shoot the Corsican? He tried to blow up the UN and then shot a hostage, I think Ressler has sufficient cause! I was also annoyed that he let the Corsican get away so he could stop and help the shot guy. Priorities, Ressler! He could have taken a second to grab a random person and tell them to apply pressure/call 911 before continuing his pursuit but he should have gone after him!

+ Interesting that Liz was so open with claiming Red as her father. There is no way that the cop isn't going to spread that information.

+ Cooper telling the DA about the immunity deal and Task Force could definitely come around to bite them all. This whole jail plot is supposed to last a fair amount of time - I wonder if the whole FBI deal is going to come out? If it does then Red is going to be screwed on his whole blacklist scheme. No bad guy is going to do business with him ever again.
