Pretty Little Liars 1x01 – 1x03 Thoughts

iaria1x01 ‘Pilot’
I like the show, and the girls, well enough so far. The mystery is interesting though I’d have loved it more if it’d been left open as to any of the girls having something to do with Alison’s disappearance and possible death and not just Spencer.
• It was great to see Holly Marie Combs again. I hadn’t known she was on this show. I also recognised Emily’s mom but couldn’t figure out where and it turns out that she’s Nia Peeples who played Karen on Y&R.
• I thought Aria’s house was gorgeous! I want it or at least to see more of it.
• When Ezra was flirting with Aria and started with ‘you’re smart’ my first thought was how the hell would he know that? He’s only known her for two minutes! Also while I understand his ‘holy crap’ response to seeing Aria in his classroom saying it out loud was not really the smoothest thing he could have done. But then he doesn’t seem to be all that smart considering the public kiss at the funeral which anyone could have come across. I’m not sold on that pairing.
• One pairing I am sold on is Emily/Maya. I'm interested in seeing where it’s going.
1x02 ‘The Jenna Thing’
• Detective Wilden is gross and I don’t know how he could get away with what he’s doing with Hanna’s mother. She may have slept with him for the first time to get the charges dropped against Hanna and he can hold it over them but what he’s doing right now (which: what the hell is he doing?!) is far better blackmail material.
• What the hell is the school thinking letting Wilden talk to the underage girls alone? I’m pretty sure that to question them there first has to be parental permission/supervision. At the very least a teacher should have been in there with them.
• I still think it would have been more interesting if it’d been left more open to the possibility that the girls killed Alison.
• I love Emily/Maya.
• I was surprised that we got a Spencer/Wren kiss and they got caught by Melissa. It feels like it’s happening really fast. I liked the flirting and him helping her out at the restaurant but the kiss made him a lot less likeable. He can’t have been that in love with Melissa if he’s so quickly and easily kissing her younger sister.
• The truth about ‘The Jenna Thing’ actually was pretty serious, more than I thought it would turn out to be (and really not a GG ‘Serena killed someone’ situation), so no wonder they’re scared.
1x03 ‘To Kill a Mocking Girl’
• Hanna versus Wilden was pretty awesome. “Is that how the police build their cases these days?” I love it. He had the upper hand so much in the previous episode that I loved seeing this especially her calling him on the thing bugging me the most about him. Then there was Ashley shutting Darren down about his questioning Hanna at school which was awesome enough in itself but then she kicked him out. It was excellent.
• Ezra remains a horrible liar and still has no subtlety and his reaction when the teacher walked in on his and Aria’s flirting made me wince. He really is not the right person to be having an affair with a student. I’m still not sold on Aria/Ezra, though I don’t hate them, and I’m not entirely sure why.
• Emily being saved by Toby was interesting and definitely speaks well of him. I wonder what Alison could have had over him to make him take such a fall? I feel like he’s going to turn out to be a pretty good guy. I liked Emily thanking him and I kind of want to see them becoming friends.
• I felt sorry for all the girls this episode because they are all having horrible times, to varying degrees because of their actions, but they keep making horrible mistakes and I just have to shake my head at them. A lot of it seems to be them letting their emotions, namely anger, get the best of them, or at least in the case of Spencer and Hanna.
- There is no way that Spencer’s plagiarism of her sister’s paper isn’t going to come back around to bite her in the ass. I do feel sorry for her especially when she was left alone at the party.
- Right now Aria’s grief is mainly because of her father’s actions but her ‘forbidden love affair’ is definitely going to come around to bite her as well. I do think that secret will probably play out for the rest of the season because once its known Ezra is going to be out of a job and possibly in jail.
- Emily has the easiest time and is the only one not making stupid mistakes though her lesbian angst certainly isn’t easy for her. I thought for sure that the photos from the booth were going to end up posted up all over school but that last shot looked far more like a wall in someone’s basement. Like a shrine. It’s making me suspicious of Maya, actually, and I hope she doesn’t turn out to be bad. Still I am really hoping it is a hidden shrine and not a wall at the school because just thinking about it is hitting my embarrassment squick.
• I’d like to get more scenes of the girls being friends together – of them building a new and stronger friendship.
