The Rain Season 1 Thoughts
Feb. 28th, 2019 12:06 pmI started watching this Danish series kind of by accident. I came across the thumbnail and thought it looked interesting so I clicked it to see what the series was about - instead the first episode began (dubbed) and I ended up watching a bit and became interested enough to keep watching.
Overall I liked the idea, I liked the characters well enough (Simone and Lea are my favourites, Patrick is interesting) and I thought it was a pretty good series. I'll definitely check out season 2.
- Ellen's death in the pilot was so unnecessary. It was like, jesus Simone, why would you do something so stupid. Rasmus, sure he was a kid but you're a teenager and should know better. But then they were scared and under stress and people aren't always logical.
- Simone saving her and Rasmus by showing the bunker map and then destroying it was brilliant.
- I was really surprised that Simone didn't offer to bring the father and son with her group when they left Copenhagen. It didn't even seem to occur to her.
- I feel like more people probably died in the immediate aftermath of the original rain then that did during the rain.
- I like that it was Lea and Beatrice who realised first that they had been fed a person in ep 5.
- Lea and Karen's friendship and Karen sacrificing herself for Lea was lovely.
- I liked Rasmus and Simone's discussion about sex.
- Simone and Lea were great in ep 6. I loved that Lea stepped between the gun and Simone. That whole scene was so wonderful. Lea slowly backing into the rain, Simone screaming for Lea to stop, and holding her from behind, them helping each other back into the bunker, then them holding each other while sitting quarantined together, the way they touched each other in comfort, Simone laying down on Lea’s lap. I loved it.
- Patrick I have complicated emotions about. He is definitely an asshole but I think it’s understandable why he is the way he is and he got a lot more depth, more sympathetic, in the latter half of the season. I apparently have a lot of thoughts/feelings about him, lol. I really felt for him when Martin accused him of being the reason Jean was taken and he broke down. I liked him and Lea bonding over missing Jean. That was a great scene. I felt for him again when Martin said “that doesn’t make us friends” when it’s clear how much Patrick cares about Martin, and about his opinion. Even more retroactively after we saw all of Patrick's flashbacks.
Him trying to kiss Simone was fine in my opinion, I understood why he'd try and more importantly he accepted when she backed away. I read the summary first and was expecting something else. Something more agressive, if not right out rapey, and it wasn't that at all. Him pushing her into rain definitely came off more as an accident though at the same time... he could have pushed her in a different direction. I get why Martin figured that Patrick tried to kill Simone with the rain but I don't actually think he did. Or perhaps Martin was talking about afterwards when Patrick's immediate reaction was to try hard to get Martin to shoot Simone. I think trying to cover up his own guilt/keep Martin thinking well of him. But that was absolutely him trying to get her killed (though also practical in the life they lead, and how they always have done it.)
Patrick running away from infected Beatrice was such a cowardly thing to do. But on the other hand he didn't immediately turn everyone over to the Strangers and only did so after being tortured for a bit.
- It feels rather appropriate that Patrick's attempt at being better, at being kind and good, ie. not killing the dog ended up backfiring when it licked sleeping Beatrice's face and killed her. Like, yup that's absolutely the kind of thing that would happen. I wish we'd gotten a shot of his face when Rasmus told Thomas that a dog had licked them. He was right there! She was his friend too. How did he feel hearing that he (might) have lead to her death by saving the dog?
- I do wonder though if it wasn't the dog but rather Rasmus and whatever it was his dad did to him that killed her. They slept together, presumably the only time anyone has shared fluid with him. Rasmus inadvertently kills the Stranger left behind who kissed his forehead - where there was blood/sweat. Of course that was after being injected with the virus but I feel like it's still as likely.
- I was not expecting Beatrice's death, and certainly not like that. It was so quiet and unexpected.
- I like that Simone was not pleased that Martin kicked Patrick out.
- I wish we'd gotten more of an initial reaction from Lea over Beatrice's death. They were together for the longest but there was only a quick shot of shock. Martin got his moment of grief. The episode focused a lot on Rasmus's despair. I really wanted a moment of Lea reacting too. Mainly of her breaking down and Simone stepping back from the glass to comfort her.
That said, Lea comforting Martin then breaking down while burying Beatrice was great. I liked him comforting her back. I loved her putting her hand over her heart and then Martin's, "she's right here and will be forever", just as Karen taught her.
- I like Beatrice's funeral and that the show gave the characters the space to grieve for her. I like that it was Simone who covered her face and actually covered her with the dirt.
- We got two great moments of Simone/Lea/Martin in eps 6 & 7. Two very contrasting moments in the exact same spot. In 6 the three of them walk into the rain and laugh and dance, and it's full of joy both individually and as a group sharing it together. In 7 they bury Beatrice, remembering and grieving for her both individually and as a group sharing it together. I live the comparison of the them holding hands and laughing as the dance in a circle in the rain and then less than a day later the three of the crouched in front of a grave, tightly holding each other's hands as they grieve. That was so well done.
- I liked Martin and Patrick's reunion and make up.
- Frederik Anderson did terrible things to save his son (killed so many innocent people, possibly destroyed humanity by not disclosing a cure) but it bothered me less than the doctor in the other bunker who infected his own young daughter with barely a hesitation. That was so disturbing.
- I do love how this group keeps standing between each other and a gun pointed at them.
- I loved Lea kicking Frederick as they escaped.
- I loved that Patrick figured out the situation first - that they couldn't but Simone could leave - and took Thomas hostage before anyone else had caught up, anticipating the need.
- I love that Simone refused to abandon the others. I love that was her main reason even when she should have been considering that taking a plague carrying/dispersing person out into the world would have been a massively bad idea. Because it would have been, yeesh.
- Shipping: I've come out of this not really actively shipping anything. I like Simone/Martin fine. I like Simone/Lea and Martin/Patrick. And even some combination of the four of them. But mostly in a vague way. Rasmus, Beatrice and Jean I have no interest in at all.
