I Smell A Rat

I enjoyed this episode a lot more then the last one.

• Strangely, for me, I loved the Jason scenes. All of them. They were excellent. I loved him with Tara, especially the scene in the bedroom. If not for the Eric/Sookie kiss that would have been my favourite scene of the episode (and actually it might be anyway).

I just found the whole thing very powerful and moving and I felt so sorry for both of them so much. In fact I was feeling 100% empathetic towards Jason this episode when usually I find myself caught between ‘don’t care’ and ‘eye-rolling’ at his latest bout of craziness and idiocy. I kept finding myself wanting to hug him – when he had his flashbacks after he killed Franklin, his earnestness when Bill was telling him to guard Sookie, during his confession to Sookie about Eggs, the whole Jason/Tara scene from start to finish, and then at the end frantic about losing Sookie as well. Poor Jason.

He also made me pretty gleeful when he stopped taking Bill’s crap, yelled at him and then ordered him out of his house. That was awesome. Now that the truth about Crystal is out I’m hoping that that storyline gets more interesting.

• The Eric/Sookie kiss was excellent. The whole ‘only thing I’d regret’ speech was a bit much but I loved the kiss. I loved her kissing back. I want more.

• We didn’t get near enough Pam and Pam/Eric this episode but I loved what we did get. As always, really. I loved Pam freaking out about Eric. I loved how overt their love is for each other and I really loved Pam pointing out that she does in fact love him as much as he loved Godric.

- Also: “Blah, blah, vampire emergency, blah.” Hee.

• I was very happy to get another Eric dream from Sookie. It feels like it’s been so long and I’ve missed them. So how much of what happens in these dreams are from Sookie’s subconscious and how much do they have to do with Eric? Can he influence them? Her ‘ew’ when he stated that she had feelings for him was very... teenagery and not very emphatic. I didn’t believe it at all. It sounded like something you say because you think you should and because you want to hide what you really think then because it’s how you really feel.

• I was pleased to see Sookie starting to seriously question Bill. Her dream Eric pointing out Bill’s untrustworthiness and saying he was her ‘survival instinct’, her voicing doubt about Bill’s trustworthiness to Jason, her going to Eric for the truth... I hope it ends with her learning the truth at the end of the season and then finally ending it with him for good.

• I was a bit surprised when Eric was the one to grab Sookie. I was actually expecting Pam to have done it in an effort to save Eric. I really hope that Eric has a good plan here; a plan that doesn’t involve horribly betraying Sookie (... more) as well as a plan that’s actually a plan unlike what he did with Talbot.

• I loved Sookie just comforting Tara but I really wish that what happened to her, and the fact that Bill did nothing to help her, would at least be a part of Sookie’s issues with him (if and hopefully when they break up).

• Jessica and Hoyt getting back together at the beginning of the season would have made me happy and I would have cheered at their reunion. Unfortunately at this point I’m not only eh about it I find I actively don’t want it. It’s just that I don’t like Hoyt anymore. I mean him punching Tommy in the face like that is one reason why. It was completely uncalled for. The TWoP recap thought it was badass; I just wanted to smack him upside the head.

• Bill being a good dad to Jessica is always my favourite of his scenes so it was nice to get one this episode even if it was very short. Really all his scenes should be Bill/Jessica family bonding/fighting/being.

• I loved were-leopard Crystal at the end – both pretty and awesome – and I can’t wait to see where the show goes with it.

• Todd Lowe’s acting when Arlene told Terry that the baby was Rene’s (also: evil) was pretty impressive and watching Terry’s expression change I was unsure about how he would react in the end. “I will raise that child as my own. Together we will surround that baby with more love than it can handle.” was both sweet and ‘um, Terry, you don’t get to order her to keep the baby’. I think I’m less annoyed over it because it’s Terry saying it and he’s like the best guy on the show.

• I don’t really have a lot to say about the Jesus/Lafayette scenes. They were okay if dizzy making but nothing special either way. I do feel like them sharing V is going to come back to bite them later. Is that V more of Sophie-Anne’s?

• Sam’s response to Tommy: “Well, you’re an idiot.” made me laugh out loud. Beyond that however I am still very eh about Sam’s story line. I don’t really care about Sam a lot but he’s always been the honestly nice guy (with mainly boring storylines) and I don’t know what this new back story for him is supposed to add to the character. Was it to show that he can empathise with Tommy?
