iaria: (Sailor Moon is excited!)

I love this series. ♥ It is so well done, and completely adorable and full of wonderful characters and relationships. I wasn’t planning on it but I ended up watching the whole series over the last two days. I couldn’t stop watching! Definitely a series I would highly recommend.

Act 1&2 ‘Ahiru and the Prince/Pieces of the Heart’

• I was a bit unsure in the first episode. Ahiru really seemed to be someone who was going to make me spend a lot of time wincing in embarrassment. Plus her voice is very high and she is very silly. But, no, she’s adorable and sweet and wonderful.

• I love Ahiru’s two friends. I love their relationships with Ahiru and how they react differently to her – Pique, who spends so much time rolling her eyes and sighing at Ahiru, and Lilie, who spends so much time smiling and fangirling over Ahiru. Pique is the serious one and Lilie is the playful one but they both love her completely. I love that. I loved the moment in the first episode where they find her waiting in the bushes, figure out her plan and then support her completely and encourage her and them walking away while cheering ‘fight, fight’ over and over. It made me smile. My favourite bit though was actually after they turned the corner and Pique wondered if it’ll go well and Lilie’s response is “It’ll be alright. If she fails we can just comfort her anyway!” There are so many layers of love I have for that sentence.

• I liked the Ahiru/Rue interactions and how friendly it all was, and loved that Rue picked Ahiru to be her dance partner – both for character reasons and because it was very femslashy.

• I love how during Arikuimi and Mytho’s dance Mytho was the one being lifted and then we got two girls dancing and no one thought it strange.

• I’m very curious about who Fakir is because his controlling behaviour towards Mytho is making me think that he might know the truth.

Act 3&4 ‘A Princess’s Oath/Giselle’

• I loved the music when Rue was explaining the tale of Princess Tutu. It was very fairy tale and appropriate.

• I loved Rue standing up to Fakir and refusing to do what he said.

• Pique and Lilie continue to be wonderful and excellent friends. “Being absurd is your best quality!” Heh. I liked them returning to the classroom to practice with her.

• I also really enjoyed all the Rue/Ahiru interactions especially the exchange over what Ahiru was going to call her.

Act 5 ‘On the Eve of the Fire Festival’

• I really liked this episode. I’m glad that Ahiru had the lamp at the end and I’m choosing to believe that she took her back to her room. She told Ahiru “I’d love to shine more for you.” and if they are going to give a lamp emotions and desires (even if it was because of Mytho’s heart) then I want her to get a happy ending.

“You have little common sense. You’re too cute!” I love how Lilie loves Ahiru because of her imperfections.

• Fakir pinning Ahiru to the wall was kind of hot.

Act 6 ‘Aurora Dreaming’

• The gender stuff in this show is so wonderful. ♥ I loved that it’s Paulamoni and not her husband Paulo who caught Ahiru since it’s something that normally you’d have a guy do, especially since it mirrors Ahiru/Mytho. And that it caused Ahiru to get all red-faced (as she does with Mytho).

“It’s cute that she’s as clueless as she looks!” Oh, Lilie. I love that I always know when it’s Lilie talking. I love how she’s completely for Ahiru liking two boys.

• I loved Ahiru and Neko-sensei’s simultaneous freak-outs when Paulamoni chose Ahiru to dance. It made me laugh.

Act 7 ‘Raven Princess’: I love the girls dragging Ahiru out of class. See, friendship – dragging you away when you listlessly agree to marry your teacher. “No worries there! You never understood anything about school anyway!” LOL!

Act 8 ‘The Fountain of Warriors’

• So Fakir was the prince’s friend and he broke apart Mytho’s heart (to seal the raven) and has stayed by his side since as his protector. I love that.

• Fakir has endeared himself a lot more to me with his kindness to duck Akiru. Ahiru being so determined to think he’s the bad guy makes me think he’s actually a good one.

• It’s interesting to me that he didn’t press his case once Mytho decided to pierce his heart but then I suppose he was weapon-less and outnumbered.

“I want always to be with Tutu.” Huh. I’ve gotten the feeling since the beginning that Ahiru wouldn’t end up with Mytho but I wonder if she will?

• I loved her fighting Fakir with a fan (against his sword).

• I like Rue fighting her role as Princess Kraehe from the start.

Act 9 ‘Black Shoes’:

• This was the first time that Rue ever just chatted with another girl – “I might not hate it.” – does she really not have any friends? That’s sad. I want Rue and Ahiru to become friends so much.

• I loved Ahiru understanding Malen’s obsession with drawing Rue because Rue is very pretty.

“A story does not need two protagonists.” But it can be nice when it does. “A prince doesn’t need two princesses.” Ditto. Tutu/Mytho/Kraehe could work for me. I wonder what would have happened if Fakir hadn’t shown up right then and instead Tutu had gone to Kraehe?

Act 10 ‘Cinderella’:

• I love the background we got on Fakir and Mytho in this episode including just why Fakir is so controlling and protective of Mytho.

• It took Fakir a bit long to figure out that Ahiru is Tutu.

• Mytho’s defining trait is that he’ll rescue anything helpless that needs his help regardless of the danger to himself, with or without his heart. I wonder if that’s what draws him to Tutu - that she is the same?

• Lilie always makes me smile.

Act 12 ‘Banquet of Darkness’:

• This was an excellent Ahiru/Fakir episode. From his expression when she kept falling or hitting walls, to him saving her, to his expression and reaction when she reappeared naked before him. I enjoyed it all. I do find myself liking Ahiru/Fakir more than Ahiru/Mytho. I was very amused that though Fakir didn’t know if ducks can drown he was pretty sure that Ahiru would find a way regardless.

• It’s interesting that Mytho was most interested in the Tutu parts of his story. I wonder why?

• I loved the music when they finally found Mytho.

• I haven’t said before but I appreciate Tutu’s much shorter transformation sequence.

Oh, for pete’s sake... for the first couple episodes the opening prologue telling the story was the same so I just assumed it was always the same and stopped watching it. Only, it’s not. The story does change, or perhaps just expands to tell more of it.

Act 13 ‘Swan Lake’: I liked the Tutu/Kraehe dance off and I loved Tutu and Mytho’s dance at the end. I was surprised that Tutu left the cavern without even looking to see if Fakir was there. This episode didn’t have the ending credits but instead the credits over Tutu/Mytho’s dance and Drosselmeyer commenting on the turn of events. I wonder why the change?

Act 14 ‘Monster Raven’: I’m not completely sure but I bet it was Lilie who told Ahiru to ‘run around panicking!’ Now was Fakir trying to help Ahiru or was he trying to prevent her from telling Mytho’s the truth? I could see it either way. He did start that conversation about what Mytho’s thinks of Tutu.

Act 15 ‘Coppelia’

• They saw Tutu as a white swan... hmm. I wonder if in the end when Tutu disappears in a flash of light, as I am sure she will, she will reappear from it turned into a white swan?

• The duck – swan – princess connection is very neat and well done.

• I love that Lilie is on Ahiru’s side in the fight between friends and I loved her imagining of the fight that happened between them.

Act 16 ‘Prayers of a Maiden’

• I love how much Ahiru loves Freya as soon as she meets her.

• I think this episode shows that Fakir does feel more for Ahiru than just friendship. Or at least I saw that in his gentle smile at her (when she was happy to meet Edel again), his expression when Ahiru said she was there about Mytho, and his protecting her about the truth of what happened to Mytho. Ahiru seems to have this habit of ending up naked in front of Fakir.

• I thought perhaps Princess Tutu would end up dancing in the competition and would win it.

Act 18 ‘Wandering Knight’

• I loved Fakir grabbing Tutu by the waist and saving her. I watched it several times. I don’t know what it is about it but it just really worked for me.

• I also loved Tutu’s fight with the Knight and Fakir’s “Can my sword not even protect her.” and his one tear.

Act 19 ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’: Fakir called Ahiro/Tutu ‘his’ princess – aw. I wonder what Fakir’s reaction was when he read ‘Ahirus’ love letter to him? He had to have been at least disappointed when she told him she didn’t write it though I am not surprised that we didn’t get to see that.

Act 20 ‘A Forgotten Story’

“I’m quite jealous. Of Fakir being with such a cute girl.” Sometimes the femslash is just there on this show.

• I’m going to take this act as foreshadowing as to how things are going to play out romantically on this show though it might just be foreshadowing that Ahiru’s going to be torn between Mytho and Fakir. If there is a direct parallel between the two triangles which person is Mytho and who is Fakir? Or is it actually Mytho’s as Racheal and Ahiru and Rue are the two he is torn between?

Act 21 ‘Spinners’

• The latter half of this show has shifted its focus from Tutu and Tutu/Mytho to Tutu, Fakir and Tutu/Fakir and it’s been really noticeable in the last few acts.

“I could hear your voice.” Aw, he heard her voice and followed.

• When Lilie stated that she wished Ahiru could feel the pain of en pointe too I suddenly realised the word to describe her – a sadist, and one specifically focused on Ahiru.

Act 24 ‘The Prince and the Raven’

• I love that in Kraehe’s happiest memories of being Rue they included her spending time with Ahiru.

• I was surprised that it was Rue’s love who brought Mytho back to himself and not Tutu.

Act 25 ‘The Dying Swan’

“I wonder why Fakir makes the weak me stronger. Always.” Aw. So in the end it is Tutu/Fakir and Mytho/Rue. I’m good with that.

• I am surprised by how easily Fakir and Ahiru, but especially Fakir took to the idea of her returning to being a duck permanently.

• All four of our main characters helped to defeat the raven but it was Ahiru’s unwillingness to give up and her hope that made it all possible. When she shone with light I was so sure that she’d turned into a swan. I’m a bit obsessed with her being a swan in the end. It would just fit so well!

• I am pleased that everyone got a happy ending, even neko-sensei, though it’s not a ‘perfect’ ending. Lilie and Pique still feel Ahiru’s absence and while Mytho and Rue got to fly off to their happily ever after, forever dancing in each other’s arms, Ahiru is once again a duck. It’s nice that she and Fakir are together but... it’s still a little sad. But then I guess that just makes it all the more fairy tale
