Captain Marvel Review
Mar. 10th, 2019 10:15 pmI enjoyed it.
I wasn't sold on Brie Larson as Captain Marvel going in but I thought she was great. I really enjoyed Carol's attitude, self-confidence and joking. The one issue I had is that I felt like the movie didn't explore her emotions post-reveal. We got one short scene and then nothing.
This movie didn't have as much, hmm, in your face humour? Laugh-out loud moments. But it still managed to be very fun with moments of humour, and I liked how lower key it was on that front.
The Carol/Fury partnership and friendship was wonderful. Enjoyed their little buddy road trip as much as I was expecting to.
Fury was great. I loved seeing him younger and more open. Having fun. Being a giant cat person. The de-aging they did on SLJ was great too because I didn't really notice.
I loved the Carol/Maria relationship. They ended up being the emotional heart of the movie for me.
I really liked that Maria went on the mission and got to save anyone with her awesome flying. I was half expecting Carol to save them so I loved that Maria did it herself.
Loved Monica and 'Lieutenant Trouble', how she convinced her mom to go with Carol, and her telling the Skrull girl to never change her eyes because they were beautiful.
Goose was adorable and amazing. Loved her floating in space, getting baby-talked by Fury, eating the Tesseract and several Kree, and the fact that she was the one who took out Fury's eye was perfect. As was the fact that Fury kept her as a pet afterwards. I hope she shows up again. She's not actually a cat so it's possible!
Loved the Kree putting a Hannibal-style muzzle on Goose and Fury's offence at being deemed not a threat.
I rather pleased that there was no romance in the movie. That Carol/Yon-Rogg weren't a thing, that she didn't have some boyfriend left behind. That said it felt like in a slightly different script Carol and Maria were a couple not BFF and I kind of want to see that version. Also Carol/Fury was really great.
The power special effects for Captain Marvel were really well done. Loved all of it but especially when she learned to fly and took out the Kree warships. I love how much joy she took in it.
I knew going in that the Kree are not good and yet I still somehow didn't see the twist that the Skrulls were coming. So that ended up being a nice reveal for me, good job writers.
Talos was kind of delightful which was unexpected but great. I loved his story.
I liked Benning a lot, really liked her being somewhat of a mentor to Carol (and that she was who Carol most admired), and loved the reveal that she was Mar-Vell. I love that Carol took her name from her.
I love that Fury got The Avengers Initiative name from Carol's call sign.
I love that at the end Carol refused to play by Yon-Rogg's rules and simply shot him. That's exactly how that should have gone.
I liked that when Carol attacked the old lady Skrull other passengers kept jumping to stop her.
It does make you wonder why Fury didn't call in his good friend Carol when aliens attacked in Avengers, or when Ultron was going to destroy the world in AoU.
It was so great to see the Avengers in the mid-credits scene.
